India’s newly appointed High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Dinesh Trivedi, officially arrived in Bangladesh on Friday, June 12, 2026, to begin his diplomatic assignment in Dhaka.

Accompanied by his wife, Mrinal Trivedi, the envoy entered Bangladesh around noon through the Benapole Land Port in Sharsha Upazila, Jashore, after crossing the Benapole–Petrapole border.

He was welcomed by Indian Deputy High Commissioner Pawan Kumar Tulsi Das and Bangladesh Ministry of Foreign Affairs Deputy Chief of Protocol Arif Mahmud, along with senior officials from the port, immigration, local administration, and law enforcement.

Following immigration and official protocol procedures, Trivedi proceeded to Dhaka under official security arrangements.

Speaking shortly after his arrival, the new High Commissioner emphasized the importance of stronger cooperation between Bangladesh and India, highlighting the close geographical, historical, and cultural ties shared by the two neighboring countries.

He expressed optimism that both nations could work together to address common challenges, including visa-related matters, through mutual understanding and goodwill.

Trivedi stated that one of his primary objectives during his tenure would be to strengthen people-to-people relations, describing the friendship between the citizens of Bangladesh and India as the foundation of bilateral cooperation. He also noted that the relationship extends beyond geographical proximity and is built upon shared aspirations and longstanding social connections.

Appointed in April 2026, Dinesh Trivedi is a 75-year-old former Indian Union Minister and senior political leader. His appointment is considered significant because it marks the first time India has assigned a politician, rather than a career diplomat, as its High Commissioner to Bangladesh.

The development is being closely watched by diplomatic observers, who view the appointment as an opportunity to further strengthen bilateral engagement between the two neighboring countries.
